We, the members of the Latin American and Iberian Studies (LAIS) Program at Bard College, are committed to inclusive excellence in all its forms. As interdisciplinary scholars of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, two of the world’s most diverse regions, we study both in their respective colonial and post-colonial eras according to a variety of scholarly and cultural approaches. These regions give us unique insights into questions of diversity and inclusivity that we practice in our teaching, scholarship, and human interactions. We are committed to maintaining an intellectual environment characterized by respect for and commitment to social justice that is inclusive of linguistic, cultural, and methodological differences. We are committed to the study of different forms and meanings of ability and disability, citizenship, class, ethnicity, gender, geography, nationality, political affiliation, religion, race, and socio-economic background. We are attentive to differences in institutional resources, and mindful of the racial, ethnic, sexual, gender, cultural, class, and geographical background of the students, faculty, staff, and wider community that we belong to, interact with, and serve. We likewise affirm our unwavering support for Black Lives Matter, Indigenous movements, and social justice movements around the world.
